The State Council recognized Tongjiao Temple as a national key Buddhist establishment in 1953. It became a convent for Buddhist nuns. They still observe religious activities here. Today Tongjiao Temple is the only Bhikkhuni temple in Beijing.

Originally, Tongjiao Temple was built during the Ming Dynasty which was between 1368 and 1644. Over the years, it has undergone many changes. The modern history of Tongjiao Temple began in 1949. Two nuns from Fujian Province dedicated themselves to rebuilding it. The building was dilapidated. They worked hard and raised funds.

In 1983, the Chinese government recognized Tongjiao Temple as a key cultural site. The nunnery has continuously served its purpose. It instructs those in the Buddhist faith.

Inside, you’ll find lush greenery and vibrant flowers. The central courtyard features Buddhist statues. Altars invite the burning of incense. Tongjiao Temple provides a peaceful atmosphere. It is more like a retreat than just a tourist spot.

Tongjiao Temple has more than ten buildings. These include the Shanmen and Mahavira Hall. There is also a Hall of Sangharama Palace. You will find a Reception Hall, Dining Hall and Hall of Guru. Bedrooms also provide accommodation.

The temple was initially called Tongjiao Chanlin. It served as a practice center for Bhikkhuni. During the Cultural Revolution, the Red Guards attacked Tongjiao Temple. Buddhist statues and scriptures were destroyed. The Bhikkhuni were forced to return to secular life.

Following the 3rd plenary session, Tongjiao Temple was reopened. This happened due to the national policy of free religious belief. Reconstruction soon followed.

Visiting Tongjiao Temple offers a glimpse into Beijing’s diverse religious landscape. Buddhism plays a significant role in the city’s history. It influences culture and art.
