In 1958, a pioneering school opened its doors in Hamburg. It was called Sonderschule Eppendorfer Landstraße. This marked the beginning of what we now know as Schule Tegelweg. It was the first state-run school for physically disabled children in West Germany. The school initially occupied two old buildings on Eppendorfer Landstraße 59. Imagine the challenges and triumphs within those walls, as students and teachers navigated this new educational landscape. Fast forward to 1972. A foundation stone was laid at Tegelweg for a purpose-built special needs school. This new Schule Tegelweg was designed to accommodate around 150 students. A “special day-care center” for about 50 children was also planned. The building was completed in 1975. Schule Tegelweg moved from Eppendorfer Landstraße to its new home on Tegelweg. The accompanying day-care center, with its distinctive round design, also opened in 1975, now with a capacity for 116 children. This expansion reflects the growing recognition of the need for inclusive education. Years later, in 2008, an architectural competition was held for further expansion of Schule Tegelweg. Although these plans didn’t materialize, they demonstrate the ongoing commitment to providing the best possible learning environment. Today, Schule Tegelweg continues to serve the community. It stands as a testament to the dedication of educators and the resilience of students with physical disabilities. The school’s journey, from its humble beginnings to its modern campus, mirrors the broader progress towards a more inclusive society.
