In 1869, a spark ignited in Buckhead, Atlanta. A spark of faith. This spark was the beginning of New Hope African Methodist Episcopal Church. The first gatherings were simple “camp meetings” at the New Hope Camp Ground. Imagine those early days, newly emancipated slaves seeking solace and community in their shared faith. They met under the open sky, their voices rising in prayer and song. New Hope Church was more than just a place of worship. It was a beacon of hope, a testament to their resilience. In 1872, their hope took physical form. James H. Smith, a white Buckhead farmer, bequeathed three acres of his land to the congregation. This generous act allowed them to build a church and a school, solidifying their presence in the community. The original church building, constructed before 1900, served as a spiritual anchor for decades. Tragically, in 1927, fire consumed the structure. Undeterred, the congregation persevered. The following year, the basement of the current building was laid, a foundation of hope rising from the ashes. The new sanctuary was completed in 1936, a symbol of their unwavering faith. Across the street from New Hope Church lies the historic New Hope Cemetery, a silent witness to the lives lived and lost. Within its 1.86 acres rest dozens of graves, many belonging to those early church members, the formerly enslaved who built this community. Today, New Hope Church stands as a proud landmark in Buckhead. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith and the strength of community. A visit to New Hope Church is more than just a sightseeing stop. It’s a journey through time, a connection to the struggles and triumphs of those who came before.
