The roar of the Main River. A constant companion to the Staustufe Offenbach.

Here we stand before the Staustufe Offenbach. A vital part of the Main River’s infrastructure. It wasn’t always this way. The Main River was once shallow. Unfit for the larger ships navigating the Rhine. That changed. Between 1883 and 1886 the lower Main was canalized. Five simple weirs were built. They improved navigation. The Frankfurt Westhafen a new harbor was created.

But the Staustufe Offenbach itself has a longer history. Built between 1898 and 1900 it started as a simple needle weir. It only had one lock chamber and a small flood chute. Plans to upgrade it came as early as 1930. They were delayed. Financial difficulties stopped the project. It wasn’t until 1949 to 1953 that the major reconstruction happened. The official opening was in June 1953.

This wasn’t the end. In 1957 the Staustufe Offenbach was expanded. A self-service lock for larger vessels was added. A small boat lock was built as well. This boat lock however only opened in 1967. Its entrance was lowered beneath the surface of the upper water.

The Staustufe Offenbach is more than just a dam. It’s a marvel of engineering. The weir boasts three sections. Each is 44 50 meters wide. It uses two roller gates and a single sluice gate. The two Kaplan turbines generate power. A constant 4100 kilowatts. Generating an impressive 22 7 million kilowatt hours annually. A pedestrian walkway spans the river. It allows for a closer view.

A fish ladder exists. Its location is unfortunately suboptimal. The current pushes fish towards the power plant outflow on the opposite side. They struggle to find the ladder. This is a small detail. It highlights how even the best designs are still works in progress.

Today the Staustufe Offenbach is not just a functional element. It’s a vital link in the Main’s waterway system. It’s a testament to human ingenuity. It’s a silent giant. Guarding the flow of the river. Its history echoes with the sounds of progress. Its future as bright as the sun reflecting off the Main’s surface. And a vital part of the Route of Industrial Culture. A true symbol of Offenbach’s legacy.
