Imagine a bustling village absorbed into a sprawling city. That’s Giulești in Bucharest. It is a neighborhood with layers of history. We are standing in Giulești now. It is in Sector 6 of northwestern Bucharest.
Giulești’s story stretches back millennia. Archaeological finds reveal habitation since the Neolithic period around 6000 BC. The Boian culture thrived here. One archaeologist even named a phase of it the “Giulești phase”. Imagine early settlers building their lives here.
The first written record of Giulești appears in 1548. A document issued by Mircea Voda mentions it. The historian Constantin Giurescu suggests the name comes from a boyar named Giulea. He may have owned the estate.
In the late 16th century Mihai Viteazul gave the Giulești estate to the Sarindar monastery. The monastery held it until 1863. Then Alexandru Ioan Cuza secularized the monastery’s properties. This act dispossessed many residents of Giulești. Independence fighters and railway workers lost their lands.
Around 1885 Alexandru Costescu bought what remained of the estate. The area became known as Costeasca. In 1926 Giulești became a suburban commune. It was incorporated into Bucharest in 1950.
Giulești has had several names. Between 1920 and 1940 it was called Urban Commune Grand Voivode Michael. From 1945 to 1952 it was known as February 16. Today it is Giulești again.
Giulești boasts several landmarks. The Giulești Stadium officially named Rapid Arena. It is home to the Rapid București football club. The Giulești Theatre provides cultural enrichment. Podul Grant is an important bridge. The Grivița Railway Yards remind us of the area’s industrial past. Lacul Morii offers recreation nearby.
Apartment buildings rose here in the early 1960s. Initially named Constructorilor. Later in the mid 1960s 8-story buildings were raised. Along with the Prunaru market. Mass demolitions in the 1980s replaced old houses with standardized blocks. Today only a few old houses remain.
Giulești is more than just buildings and streets. It’s a place where millennia of history intertwine. The echoes of Neolithic settlers resonate. The legacy of boyars and monasteries linger. The struggles of workers and the dreams of football fans fill the air. As we leave Giulești consider its long and varied past. It has shaped the vibrant neighborhood we see today.
