Far above the crashing waves, against the windswept precipice, clings the Capela da Santa Ana. This chapel, more than just stones and mortar, embodies the hopes and fears of generations tied to the sea. Capela da Santa Ana is one of the oldest structures in the Caldas da Rainha council. It’s believed to have been built in the 12th century. Imagine the families of fishermen, gathered at Capela da Santa Ana. They would watch their loved ones sail out into the vast Atlantic. They offered prayers for their safe return. The location, at the mouth of São Martinho do Porto bay, offered a perfect vantage point. Capela da Santa Ana provided solace and a place to reconnect with faith. For centuries, processions wound their way from Salir do Porto up to the chapel. It was a testament to the devotion of the community. The chapel held a central place in their lives. But time and the elements took their toll. By the early 20th century, though processions continued, Capela da Santa Ana had fallen into disrepair. Eventually, it lay in ruins. The scant records of its history presented a challenge to its eventual restoration. Engineers and technicians turned to 17th- and 19th-century documents and paintings to guide the reconstruction. The restored Capela da Santa Ana stands proudly once more. It overlooks the bay and the town of São Martinho do Porto. The view is breathtaking. The sea stretches out before you. The bay curves gently below. The town nestles along the shore. It’s a reward for the challenging walk up the dirt path from Salir do Porto. The Capela da Santa Ana restoration was a community effort. Funds came from the MAR 2020 program, local fundraising, the Patriarchate of Lisbon, and even from emigrants, many residing in the United States. They remembered their roots and the importance of Capela da Santa Ana. Legends surround this place. Some say the Crusaders, devoted to Saint Anne, built the chapel and named the mount in her honor. While the exact origins remain shrouded in time, one thing is certain. Capela da Santa Ana has witnessed centuries of faith, hope, and connection to the sea.
