Tucked away in the heart of Dublin, Santry Parish whispers tales of ancient tribes and modern transformations. Santry Parish isn’t just a place on the map; it’s a journey through time. The name itself, “Santry,” comes from the Irish “Seantrabh,” meaning “old tribe.” It’s a name that echoes back to 828 AD and possibly even further, to a tribe known as the Almanii. Imagine Santry Parish centuries ago, a landscape of fields and woodlands, home to Norse farmers known for their agricultural skills and unique crafts. These “fair-haired foreigners” gave their name to the entire region north of the River Tolka: Fingal.

Santry Parish witnessed the ebb and flow of power. In the 12th century, it became the base of Mac Gilla Mocholmog, chief of Fingal. Later, Adam de Feypo, a trusted lieutenant of Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath, was granted control of Santry around 1170. Santry Parish also experienced periods of conflict and upheaval. During the Irish Rebellion of 1641, a tragic misunderstanding led to the massacre of local farm labourers by Parliamentarian forces. And in 1798, the area near Santry Demesne became known as “Bloody Hollows” after the slaughter of United Irishmen marching on Dublin.

Santry Parish is also home to St. Pappan’s Church, a Church of Ireland landmark. This church, part of a larger grouping of parishes including Glasnevin and Finglas, stands as a testament to the area’s rich religious history. Beside St. Pappan’s, you’ll find an old graveyard, a silent keeper of Santry’s past. Interestingly, at one time, St. Pappan’s Catholic Church, located just off Santry Avenue in Ballymun, shared seats with St. Pappan’s Church of Ireland. The seats were literally moved between the churches for different services. Today, Santry Parish has transformed into a modern suburb, a mix of housing estates, industrial parks, and bustling roads leading to Dublin Airport. Yet, echoes of its past persist in the names of places like Shanliss, Shanowen, and Shangan, reminders of the “old tribe” that once called this place home. Even with its modern developments, Santry Parish retains a connection to its historical roots. The walled garden within Santry Demesne is now a vibrant community garden, tended by volunteers who cultivate a variety of plants, vegetables, and fruit.
