Ever felt the rumble of a train beneath your feet? The SEPTA Cynwyd Line is more than just a railway. It’s a historical thread woven through the fabric of Philadelphia.
The SEPTA Cynwyd Line a short but significant commuter rail line. It connects Center City Philadelphia to Cynwyd in Montgomery County. Originally known as the Ivy Ridge Line it boasts a rich history. Its current configuration is a truncated remnant of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Schuylkill Branch. This branch once ran all the way to Pottsville Pennsylvania. Imagine a time when trains traversed this line to Pottsville.
Electrified service began in 1930 between Philadelphia and Norristown. Plans to extend electrification further to Phoenixville never materialized. Passenger service beyond Manayunk ended in 1960. The line was de-electrified north of Manayunk though the pylons remain. A park-and-ride station at Ivy Ridge opened in 1980 extending service temporarily. This extension proved short-lived.
Poor track conditions and concerns about the Manayunk Bridge over the Schuylkill River led to the suspension of service beyond Cynwyd in 1986. The Manayunk Bridge itself a stunning example of early 20th-century engineering was deemed safe after repairs in 1999. Yet the rail line north of Cynwyd was never restored.
SEPTA made the decision to remove the tracks entirely between 2008 and 2010. The tracks were replaced by the Cynwyd Heritage Trail and Ivy Ridge Trail. The Cynwyd Line became the shortest SEPTA Regional Rail line. It’s also among the shortest regional rail lines in the United States.
The SEPTA Cynwyd Line though short has played a significant role in Philadelphia’s transportation history. From its origins as part of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Schuylkill Branch to its current status it continues to serve the community. It even played a role in the testing of new Silverliner V rail cars in 2010. This humble line even saw service briefly interrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently the I-95 bridge collapse in 2023 temporarily diverted resources from the Cynwyd Line to other routes. Service resumed shortly thereafter. The line continues its quiet but important service. Remember the next time you hear the gentle rumble of a SEPTA Cynwyd Line train the story it carries.
