Corporal Albert Lindsay. A name etched in the annals of the Australian War Memorial. He rests here, not in body, but in memory, a son of Brisbane who gave his life in the trenches of Pozières. Albert Lindsay was a bricklayer from Ironside, born in Brisbane on 19 November 1888. He enlisted on 29 June 1915, embarking from his home city aboard the HMAT Aeneas. He joined the 25th Infantry Battalion as a Private, a young man answering the call to serve his country. He rose to the rank of Corporal, a testament to his dedication and courage. On 29 July 1916, during the brutal Battle of Pozières, Albert Lindsay fell. The fighting was fierce, the landscape scarred by relentless shelling. His body was lost amidst the chaos, initially commemorated at the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux. Years later, his identity tags were discovered, finally allowing him to be laid to rest in London Cemetery and Extension at Longueval. His name is also inscribed on the Yeronga War Memorial and the Annerley Stephens Shire Council Residents Honour Board, reminders of his sacrifice close to where he lived and worked. Though he rests far from Brisbane, his story remains a part of the city’s fabric, a poignant reminder of a local lad who answered the call of duty in the Great War.
