High above us, a statue of the Virgin Mary stands. This is La Colonnella. It watches over Via Messina Marine. La Colonnella isn’t just a monument. It’s a landmark with a story.
In 1790, Senator Corradino Romagnolo had La Colonnella built. He placed it in front of his seaside villa. The location was near a rock called “Lu Scogliu di la Mustazzola.” Today, that area is known as Romagnolo. The senator wanted to mark his territory.
La Colonnella became a beacon. It guided fishermen returning home. Its faint light was a reference point for sailors. They navigated by its gentle glow. Legends and tales grew around it. These stories reflected the lives of local fishermen. They saw La Colonnella as a protector.
Giovanni Meli celebrated it in his poetry. He immortalized La Colonnella in verse. The monument became a symbol of the area. It represented hope and guidance. Locals deeply revered the statue of the Virgin. They felt a strong connection to it.
Time took its toll. Weather, neglect, and vandalism damaged La Colonnella. The elements wore down its beauty. The base began to crack. Still, the community’s devotion remained strong. They wanted to see it restored.
In 1993, the association “Salvare Palermo” stepped in. They undertook a complete restoration. Their efforts returned La Colonnella to its former glory. The city gratefully received it once more. Now, La Colonnella stands as a testament to resilience. It embodies Palermo’s spirit.
Today, La Colonnella faces the Buccheri La Ferla Fatebenefratelli Hospital. Many faithful visit it. They bring flowers. They offer prayers for patients inside. The monument is open to all.
However, the marble base supporting La Colonnella has developed cracks. Concerns have arisen about public safety. There is a need for urgent repairs. Preservation is vital for this historical landmark.
La Colonnella is more than just a statue. It is a symbol of Romagnolo’s identity. It connects the past to the present. It represents faith and community. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our heritage.
