On April 22, 1922, a new voice crackled to life in Austin, Texas. Not in Houston, you might be surprised to hear! Yes, KTRH-AM, a Houston institution, actually began its journey far from the bayous. Originally licensed as WCM, the station was owned and operated by the University of Texas at Austin. Imagine the university, trying to juggle academics and the exciting, uncharted territory of radio broadcasting. However, the financial strain proved too much, leading them to sell WCM in 1929. Enter Jesse H. Jones, a prominent Houston businessman who saw the potential of radio. Jones, owner of the iconic Rice Hotel, moved the station to Houston and changed its call letters to KTRH. He envisioned KTRH-AM as a powerful voice for the city, reflecting its energy and ambition. The station found its first home in the Rice Hotel, broadcasting the sounds of the era, including shows from the Columbia Broadcasting System. In 1942, KTRH-AM moved to its current home on the AM dial, 740 kHz, boosting its signal to a powerful 50,000 watts. This move solidified its reach and influence, making it a household name across Southeast Texas. Over the years, KTRH-AM has witnessed history unfold. It has been a constant companion to Houstonians, delivering news, entertainment, and a sense of community. KTRH-AM is more than just a radio station. It’s a living testament to the city’s growth, resilience, and enduring spirit.
