Two spirited bronze foals greet us here at the Zwei Fohlen Sculpture. They stand proudly, life-sized, upon a simple pedestal of concrete slabs. The sculptor, Heinrich Drake, first modeled these graceful creatures in 1936. The bronze casting, however, didn’t happen until 1954. The Zwei Fohlen Sculpture found its permanent home here sometime between 1954 and 1956. Interestingly, these foals have a twin. Another cast of Drake’s work exists in Berlin’s Tierpark Friedrichsfelde. There, the foals stand closer together, creating a different dynamic. Here, at the FEZ Wuhlheide, the foals seem to capture a moment of playful energy, their positions suggesting a sense of freedom and youthful exuberance.
