Was there truly a promise made amidst the chaos of war? We stand before the Capela do Calvário, a testament to a vow fulfilled. It sits within a tranquil park in Valongo, a town spared the ravages of the Napoleonic invasions. João Onteiro da Maia, witnessing the devastation around him, pledged to build a chapel if Valongo remained untouched. His promise focused on a specific location, Calvário, already marked by three crosses. In 1813, construction began on the Capela do Calvário. The chapel is a simple, rectangular structure made of granite. Its main façade features a central door surmounted by a bell. The chapel’s gabled roof points skyward, ending in a cross, with pinnacles at each end. Inside the Capela do Calvário, you’ll find images of São Roque and São Francisco. There is also a particularly striking image of Jesus crucified, noted for its rare perfection. Outside, nestled in a small glazed shrine, rests the image of Nossa Senhora de Fátima. The Capela do Calvário isn’t just a building. It’s a symbol of hope and resilience born from a time of conflict. The surrounding park offers a place of reflection, where visitors can appreciate the chapel’s peaceful setting. The Capela do Calvário stands as a reminder of a promise kept, a beacon of faith amidst the storms of history.
