Beneath a canopy of whispering leaves, in Hamburg’s Stadtpark, stands the Adam und Eva Sculpture. These aren’t the biblical Adam and Eve most imagine. No fig leaves here. These life-sized marble figures, sculpted by Oskar Ulmer in 1933, stand proudly in their unclothed state. Adam und Eva caused a stir in the early 1930s. Some Hamburg residents found them a little too revealing for public display. The sculptures, crafted from Untersberger marble and limestone, reside in the Heckengarten, a secluded section of Stadtpark. Adam und Eva stand slightly elevated on separate stone plinths, their poses subtly asymmetrical. Eva’s bent arm further accentuates this imbalance. Their youthful, energetic forms evoke a sense of vitality, a celebration of the human form inspired by classical antiquity. Ulmer, born in Hamburg in 1888, began his artistic journey at the local School of Applied Arts and later honed his skills at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. His artistic contributions grace Hamburg’s public spaces, including the Kunsthalle and even tombstones in the Ohlsdorfer Friedhof. He returned to the mother-child theme throughout his career. It is perhaps fitting that he rests beside his wife in the same cemetery where his works stand as silent witnesses to his talent. Adam und Eva remains a testament to Ulmer’s artistry, a timeless depiction of human form in the heart of Hamburg.
