Across Gwaseon Bridge the wind whispers tales of centuries past. This isn’t just any bridge. Gwaseon Bridge stands as a silent witness to Seoul’s vibrant history. Built during the Joseon Dynasty in 1410 by King Taejong it once linked Jukjo Street with Namdaemun Gate. King Taejong’s ruthless efficiency is etched into the very stones of Gwaseon Bridge. He used stones from Queen Sindeok’s tomb for its construction. The finest stonemasons of the era shaped these stones. Gwaseon Bridge has also been called Daegwangtonggyo. Imagine royal processions crossing this very spot. Foreign dignitaries too once journeyed across it. Gwaseon Bridge was more than a passageway. It was a hub of activity. Markets thrived on either side. The bridge even hosted a vibrant folk festival each year. On the first full moon people gathered. They played games flew kites and ate nuts to ward off evil spirits. The sound of cracking nuts was believed to banish these spirits. It was believed crossing Gwaseon Bridge ensured good health. Sadly Gwaseon Bridge was buried for over a century. The construction of a highway in 1958 covered it. But its story didn’t end there. Restoration work began in 2003. It concluded in 2006. Today some of the original stones remain. Gwaseon Bridge stands as a testament to resilience a symbol of Seoul’s enduring spirit. As you stand here imagine the echoes of laughter the rumble of carts the whispers of history. Feel the weight of time the strength of a bridge that has survived. Gwaseon Bridge invites you to step back in time to experience the heart of ancient Seoul.
