Can you imagine a high school with a Lakota Sioux rallying cry? Right here in Manvel, Texas, Manvel High School embraces the spirit of “Hoka Hey!” Manvel High School opened its doors in the fall of 2006. It started with just 9th and 10th grades, gradually adding 11th and 12th grades over the next two years. This marked the arrival of Alvin ISD’s second high school, a much-needed addition to accommodate the growing student population. Manvel High School was built to alleviate overcrowding at Alvin High School and serve the western part of Alvin ISD. The school’s first graduating class, the class of 2009, consisted of 275 seniors. Manvel High School’s construction took place in two phases. The first phase, completed in 2006, cost $52 million and accommodated 1,500 students. The second phase, finished in 2009, expanded the school’s capacity to 2,500 students and added an auditorium, a larger weight room, and more classroom space. Did you know the auditorium’s construction was delayed due to Hurricane Ike? The hurricane damaged the steel, requiring a complete replacement. Interestingly, the school’s elevator was the first one within Manvel’s city limits. It remained the only elevator until a hotel was built north of the school on Highway 6. In 2022, Iowa Colony High School opened, further easing the burden on Manvel High School. Today, Manvel High School primarily serves the northern part of Manvel, above Highway 6. It also serves a small portion of Iowa Colony, also above Highway 6. In its athletic endeavors, Manvel High School competes in a variety of sports, including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, powerlifting, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. A unique tradition at Manvel High School is the awarding of letter jackets to the teacher and paraprofessional of the year. A poignant reminder of past students stands in front of the school: a tree and plaque dedicated to those lost in car accidents and other tragic events.
