Perhaps you’ve heard of David Oppenheim? Let’s delve into the story of a man whose legacy extends beyond this memorial park bearing his name. David Oppenheim was born in Detroit in 1922. He became a significant figure in the world of music and arts.

David Oppenheim’s early life was marked by a move to New York City after his father’s death. He quickly became an accomplished clarinet player. He attended Juilliard and graduated from the Eastman School of Music.

During World War II, David Oppenheim served as an anti-tank gunner. After the war, Oppenheim directed the Masterworks division of Columbia Records in the 1950s. He worked with musical legends. One of his most notable collaborations was with Igor Stravinsky. They formed a friendship and Oppenheim produced several of Stravinsky’s works.

David Oppenheim attended Canadian pianist Glenn Gould’s New York debut in 1955. Impressed, he connected Gould with Columbia Records. This led to a recording contract. In the 1960s, Oppenheim transitioned to television. He produced Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. His 1964 documentary about cellist Pablo Casals, “Casals at 88”, won the prestigious Prix Italia.

From 1969 to 1991, David Oppenheim served as the second dean of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Under his leadership, the school expanded significantly. Enrollment climbed from 600 to 3000 students.

David Oppenheim’s personal life was complex. He married Judy Holliday in 1948. Some suggest it was a marriage of convenience. He later married Ellen Adler. His grandson is musician Del Water Gap. David Oppenheim died in New York City in 2007.

Interestingly, there’s another David Oppenheim. This David Oppenheim founded Machpelah Cemetery in 1912. He wanted to create a beautiful resting place for Detroit’s Jewish community. This David Oppenheim was a businessman and philanthropist. He purchased land in Ferndale and transformed it into Machpelah Cemetery. He supported the cemetery with his own funds.

He entrusted his children to maintain Machpelah Cemetery. In 1950, they created a trust for its perpetual care. Today, his great-grandchildren continue to ensure the cemetery’s beauty. Machpelah Cemetery has walking trails and garden beds. A time capsule buried in 2012 is set to be opened in 2062.

So, while we stand here at David Oppenheim Memorial Park, remember the multifaceted nature of legacy. Consider both the musician and the philanthropist. Each David Oppenheim left an indelible mark. Their contributions enriched the cultural and communal landscape. The park serves as a reminder of the impact one individual can have.
