Astonishing isn’t it? This very spot housed the Lawrence Institute of Technology back in 1932. That was during the Great Depression. Russell E Lawrence had a bold vision. He wanted to create a university that served both traditional and working students. He believed in the power of engineering and technology to revive the economy. A unique aspect of Lawrence Tech was its commitment to combining theory and practice. Students weren’t just learning concepts. They were applying them.

Lawrence Tech’s early days were in Highland Park. It occupied a building leased from Henry and Edsel Ford. The building was part of the former Henry Ford Trade School. Imagine a few hundred students studying amidst the echoes of Model T assembly. Enrollment dipped during World War II. However it surged afterward thanks to the G I Bill.

In 1955 the university moved to Southfield. This was then rural land. The first structure erected here was the Engineering building. It’s fitting considering the institution’s origins. The master plan for the campus was designed by Professor Earl W Pellerin. He was quite a multitasker. He also led the design teams for the Architecture and Science Buildings. He oversaw the creation of the university’s first residence hall on Ten Mile Road. He even designed the original president’s residence.

In 1989 Lawrence Institute of Technology officially became Lawrence Technological University. This reflected its expanded offerings beyond undergraduate programs. The university continued its growth constructing more residence halls. It aimed to foster a full campus experience. The addition of Donley Hall Reuss Hall and East Residence Hall increased its residential capacity to over 1000 students.

Today Lawrence Tech stands as a testament to Russell E Lawrence’s vision. A modern campus with 107 acres and seventeen major buildings. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. It even includes the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Affleck House in Bloomfield Hills. From humble beginnings during the Depression to its present stature Lawrence Tech is a remarkable achievement. It’s a university that embraces innovation and continues to shape the future of technology and its students.
