What echoes through the centuries from this wooded hill? The Heiligenberg. It stands guard over Heidelberg. Today, we explore the Heiligenberg. It is more than just a hill. It is a chronicle of human presence spanning millennia.

The Heiligenberg’s story began long before Heidelberg even existed. Imagine 5500 BCE. Neolithic people left pottery shards here. Later, Celts recognized the Heiligenberg’s strategic value. They constructed a double-walled hill fort here around the 4th century BCE. This fort became a regional hub. It was the center for politics, religion, and culture. The Bittersbrunnen was their water source. It was restored centuries later.

The Romans arrived. They built a sacred precinct. A temple to Mercury stood where St. Michael’s basilica is now. Inscriptions honored Mercurius Cimbrianus. This suggests worship of the Germanic god Wodan. This worship continued even through the Migration Age.

Time jumps to the Carolingian period. Around 870 AD, Lorsch Abbey’s abbot founded a monastery. It was built on a former royal estate. This marks the first written mention of the Heiligenberg. It was then known as Aberinesberg. In the 9th century, Lorsch Abbey built a church. It was dedicated to Michael the archangel.

The Monastery of St. Michael was founded in 1023. Another monastery dedicated to St. Stephen followed in 1094. A noblewoman named Hazecha was buried here around 1100. Her gravestone is Heidelberg’s oldest medieval inscription. The name changed to Allerheiligen-Berg. This means all saints’ mountain. It was the ancestor of today’s name.

Conflict marked the Heiligenberg’s later years. In 1460, the church was destroyed. This was due to political conflict. The tower collapsed in 1503. By 1537, the Monastery of St. Michael was a ruin.

The Reformation brought more change. In 1555, the Count Palatine seized both monasteries. St. Stephen’s was given to Heidelberg University. The Senate decided to tear it down. They sold the stones.

Today, the Heiligenberg offers more than ruins. Climb the Heiligenberg Tower. It was constructed in the 19th century. It used stones from St. Stephen’s Monastery. Visit the Bismarck Tower. It honors Otto von Bismarck. Explore the Thingstätte. It is an open-air theatre built during the Third Reich.

The Heiligenberg is now protected from excavation. It has been since 2012. This ensures its history remains for future generations. Walking here, you connect with Celts, Romans, monks, and more. The Heiligenberg is a testament to time’s passage. It shows us layer upon layer of human endeavor.
