Whispers of history linger here at Saint Johns Convent. This wasn’t always a quiet place of worship. Saint Johns Convent in Manhattan has a rich and sometimes turbulent past. Founded in 1840 it was the second parish for German Catholics in New York City. This small timber structure was dedicated September 20 1840. Rev Zachary Kunze its first pastor resigned in 1844 due to conflict with the board of trustees. Disagreements plagued the early years. The church even burned down in 1847. The parish faced repeated closures due to disputes among parishioners and leadership. Archbishop John Hughes laid the cornerstone for a new brick church in 1847. More conflict arose with subsequent pastors resulting in further closures. Cardinal John McCloskey suppressed St John the Baptist in 1870. He requested the Capuchin Friars take control. Under the Capuchins particularly Father Bonventura Frey parish animosity lessened. The current French Gothic style church was built between 1871 and 1872. Napoleon LeBrun designed this substantial church costing $175000. Father Frey returned adding the central bell tower in 1888. The church was rededicated in 1996. A fire in 1997 destroyed the organ and choir gallery. The damage was repaired but the original organ was replaced with an electronic one. A school operated alongside the church. The Marist Brothers taught boys while the Sisters of St Dominic educated the girls. In its heyday the school accommodated 160 boys and 200 girls. The convent has witnessed much change. From early struggles and fires to periods of peace and growth Saint Johns Convent stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. Its history echoes in the very stones. It is a place where the past present and future intertwine. It is a reminder that even amidst conflict faith endures.
