Whispers of unseen heroes echo beneath our feet. Indah Water Konsortium works tirelessly. It ensures Kuala Lumpur’s wastewater flows away, treated, and safely returned. Let’s talk about Indah Water.

Indah Water is Malaysia’s national wastewater and sanitation company. It operates as Indah Water or IWK. It is a government-owned company under the Minister of Finance Incorporated. Its task is developing and maintaining a modern sewerage system for West Malaysia. Indah Water’s operations follow standards set by the Department of Environment.

Imagine a giant unseen machine. This machine diligently pumps and purifies. It protects public health and preserves our waterways. Indah Water operates and maintains thousands of sewage treatment plants. They also desludge septic tanks. Indah Water constantly innovates to recover resources and minimize waste.

Indah Water was established on April 2, 1994. The Federal Government granted the company a concession for nationwide sewerage services. Before that, local authorities were responsible. Indah Water then took over sewerage services from local authorities. This excluded the states of Sabah and Sarawak.

In June 2000, the government stepped in. They ensured a well-organized and efficient sewerage system. The Minister of Finance Incorporated acquired all equity in Indah Water. It bought the company from its former private owners.

Indah Water shares its expertise. It works with several Asian countries. This is under their IWK 2020 Transformation Plan or ITP2020. The plan, started in 2017, focuses on human capital development, innovation, automation and technology.

As of February 2019, Indah Water served over 25 million people. They operate and maintain more than 7,000 sewage treatment plants. They also manage around 20,000 km of underground sewage pipelines.

Indah Water launched a coffee-table book in December 2019. It was titled “Indah Water Memacu Negara”. This translates to “Indah Water Spurring the Nation”. It coincided with its 25th anniversary. On January 1, 2021, Indah Water took over Kelantan’s sewerage.

Indah Water’s headquarters is located at No. 1, Jalan Damansara, Kuala Lumpur. They have customer service centers throughout Malaysia. This includes Perlis, Kedah, and Pulau Pinang. You can find them in Perak, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur. Labuan, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka also have centers. So do Pahang, Terengganu, Johor and Kelantan.

In 2023, Indah Water won a Distinction Award. It was for the Public Water Agency of the Year at the Global Water Awards. This recognizes their sustainability efforts.

Next time you’re in Kuala Lumpur, remember Indah Water. It is working silently beneath the surface. It protects our health and environment. It’s a vital part of our city’s infrastructure. Indah Water keeps Kuala Lumpur clean and sustainable.
