Perhaps you’ve heard whispers of a place where golden jubilees are celebrated and community spirit thrives. That place is St George’s Primary School. This school isn’t just a building. It is a hub of history and learning in Glasgow’s Penilee.
St George’s Primary School marked its 50th anniversary on December 13. Celebrations for this Golden Jubilee stretched into May. Former pupils shared stories and brought old photos. These photos showed current pupils the school’s rich past. They showed them events that have occurred since St George’s was built.
John Docherty the Parent Council chairman understood the importance of this milestone. He reached out to former pupils staff and parents. He invited them to share memories from the past 50 years. This included pictures of sports days school events and class photographs.
Imagine what it must have been like for the pupils to see these glimpses into their school’s history. Former pupils and staff visited St George’s. They spoke to the children. They described life in the 60s 70s and 80s.
In preparation for the Golden Jubilee St George’s appealed to Glasgow City Council for help to spruce up the school. Parents were disheartened when officials suggested they paint the school themselves. This was because there were no funds available for repairs. Despite a major refurbishment plan being carried out in the city. Two years prior parents had already undertaken repair work due to the school’s condition.
Despite these challenges the community rallied. They prepared to celebrate the Golden Jubilee. Mr Docherty hoped the council would provide permanent repairs. He wanted to make the school a bright place for learning for the next 50 years.
St George’s Primary School stands as a testament to community resilience. It embodies the spirit of Penilee. The school’s history is rich with stories of collaboration. It is full of commitment. It ensures a bright future for its pupils. Remember the tale of St George’s Primary School. It is a school that turned 50 and continues to inspire.
