Was Fort Zeelandia always destined for a somber fate? Today, we stand before Fort Zeelandia, a landmark that embodies the complex tapestry of Suriname’s past. Fort Zeelandia stands as a prominent reminder of Suriname’s colonial era. Built in the 17th century, this fort has witnessed the ebb and flow of power, the clash of cultures, and the enduring spirit of the Surinamese people. Fort Zeelandia’s narrative starts in the early 1600s. French traders established a presence here, followed by the British, who named it Fort Willoughby. However, the Dutch, led by Abraham Crijnsen, seized control in 1667, renaming it Fort Zeelandia. The fort’s purpose shifted over time, serving as a military stronghold, a prison, and even falling into a state of disrepair. The darkest chapter unfolded in 1982 during the December Murders. Fifteen prominent figures opposed to the military regime were tragically killed within these very walls. This event forever marked Fort Zeelandia as a place of both remembrance and sorrow. In the aftermath, the fort was restored and transformed into what we see today – the Surinaams Museum. Here, the stories of Suriname, from pre-colonial times to the present, are vividly presented, ensuring that the lessons of the past are never forgotten.
