From humble beginnings in a small home. Yoido Full Gospel Church stands as a testament to faith and growth. It began in 1958. Pastor David Yonggi Cho and his mother-in-law Choi Ja-shil held the first service. Only a handful of people attended. Their dedication and evangelism propelled the church’s expansion.
Initially the services took place in Choi Ja-shil’s home. Then it moved to a tent in her backyard. The congregation outgrew several tents. They eventually purchased land in Seodaemun. They built the Full Gospel Revival Center. The church continued to expand rapidly.
Pastor Cho introduced the innovative cell group system. This proved remarkably successful. It enabled widespread community engagement. It empowered women in leadership roles. This challenged traditional Korean gender norms. The church continued to blossom.
By the early 1970s the Seodaemun location was too small. The church acquired land on Yeouido Island. This was a bold move. Yeouido was mostly sand dunes at the time. Economic hardships delayed construction. However the new building opened in 1973. It seated 12000 people.
The Yoido Full Gospel Church hosted the 10th Pentecostal World Conference. Membership continued its incredible rise. Satellite churches were established throughout Seoul. This addressed the growing membership. It allowed for better outreach to different communities.
The Yoido Full Gospel Church reached incredible heights. It became the world’s largest congregation recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. It had 700000 members in 1993. It continues its mission of spiritual guidance and community service. Today it remains one of the most significant churches in South Korea. Its story is a compelling example of faith’s enduring power. Its impact transcends religious boundaries. It is a remarkable story of perseverance and vision.
