“Serving the spiritual needs”. Those words encapsulate the very essence of the Islamic Institute of Knowledge.

Founded in 1981 by Imam Abdul Latif Berry, the Islamic Institute of Knowledge stands as a beacon of faith and learning in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. It is open daily to the public. The Islamic Institute of Knowledge offers prayers plus educational, social, and spiritual support to all.

Imagine stepping through its doors. You are entering a place buzzing with purpose. It is a place where community bonds are strengthened through shared faith and mutual support.

Back in 1997, the Islamic Institute of Knowledge took a bold step, becoming the first Islamic institute to establish a Muslim Academy in Dearborn. This commitment to education underscores the institute’s dedication to nurturing future generations. It strives to instill in them the values of Islam.

But the Islamic Institute of Knowledge is more than just a place of worship and education. It also houses an extensive Islamic Library. It provides resources for those seeking deeper understanding. It even offers a Muslim funeral home. It provides solace and support during times of grief. The Islamic Institute of Knowledge also has a Hussainiya for congregation and commemoration services.

Originally, the Islamic Institute of Knowledge was founded in response to the Islamic Center of America. The founders wanted a place for American-born and English-speaking Muslims. In 1983, Sheikh Abd al-Latif, Imam Abdul-Latif Berry, and others established the Islamic Institute of Knowledge. At that time, the center was located in a cinder-block building in Dearborn.

The Islamic Institute of Knowledge’s current building was once a bowling alley named Holiday Bowl. It underwent a complete transformation. It cost over a million dollars. The grand opening was March 15, 1998. The social hall can accommodate over 1,500 people. The main prayer hall can hold 250. For group prayer, 2,000 people can come together. The center also features conference rooms, a kitchen, and a library boasting over 1,000 volumes.

The Islamic Institute of Knowledge is actively involved in various activities. These include daily evening group prayers. There are also Monday afternoon prayers. You can also find Du’a tawasul on Tuesday evenings and Du’a Kumayl on Thursday evenings. Friday group prayer is a staple. English lectures are held on Saturdays. Additionally, Arabic classes take place on Fridays and Saturdays. Albatoul lectures for women are on Friday evenings.

Looking ahead, the Islamic Institute of Knowledge remains committed to serving the growing needs of the Muslim community in the Detroit area and beyond. Its seven guiding principles emphasize the importance of spreading the Prophet Muhammad’s message. They encourage Muslims to pursue knowledge and use their talents to benefit mankind. They also promote a balanced understanding of Islam and provide solutions to community issues.

As you leave the Islamic Institute of Knowledge, consider its impact on the community. It is a testament to the power of faith, education, and service. It stands as a proud symbol of Islamic heritage in the heart of Detroit.
