Envision a bustling city center, a whirlwind of activity swirling around a serene sanctuary. This is Siddique Sarai, a place of respite amidst the vibrant chaos of Chennai. Siddique Sarai isn’t just a building; it’s a story etched in stone and compassion. The story begins not within these walls, but with a young man named Abdul Hakim. In 1884, 21-year-old Hakim arrived in Madras from Melvisharam, joining his father in the hides and skins trade. He built a thriving business, transforming himself into a successful merchant. His prosperity allowed him to give back to the community, a value instilled in him by his father. One day, Hakim’s ailing father arrived at Central Station from Bombay. He found no suitable place for Muslim travelers to rest. He suggested to Hakim that he should build one. This sparked the creation of Siddique Sarai. In 1919, Hakim purchased land opposite Ripon Building for Rs. 50,000. He laid the foundation stone, a testament to his father’s vision and his own generosity. The South Indian Railway attempted to halt construction, claiming the building was too close to the tracks. A legal battle ensued, reaching the Privy Council. Finally, in 1921, Siddique Sarai was inaugurated. This three-story haven boasts 43 retiring rooms, offering free stays for the first three days, followed by nominal charges. Siddique Sarai houses separate mosques for men and women, where prayers echo at scheduled hours. Road-facing shops contribute to the Sarai’s upkeep. Before the surrounding urban sprawl, its Islamic architecture, with its arches, domes, and minarets, stood as a prominent landmark. Siddique Sarai stands as a beacon of hospitality. It whispers a tale of filial piety and community spirit in the heart of Chennai.
