Ever wonder how a small parish evolved into the Vanzaghello we see today? Vanzaghello is a comune in the Metropolitan City of Milan. It sits in Lombardy’s western zone near Varese province. Let’s explore Vanzaghello.

Vanzaghello’s story begins in the Middle Ages. It was then a parish. However, autonomy wasn’t always a given for Vanzaghello.

In 1809 Napoleon’s government suppressed Vanzaghello. Its 762 residents were deemed too few. The territory was annexed to Magnago. Yet, this was short-lived. The Austrians reversed this upon their return.

But the story doesn’t end there. Vittorio Emanuele II repeated the suppression in 1869. At that time Vanzaghello had 1220 residents. It wasn’t until May 28 1968 that Vanzaghello regained its independence. This was a century later. A street is dedicated to this date. Vanzaghello was reborn from Magnago.

Vanzaghello’s territory lies within the Ticino Valley Lombard Park. Its altitude varies from 186 to 210 meters above sea level. The Arnetta stream gently touches its southwestern edge.

The municipal coat of arms features a “V”. This represents Vanzaghello. It follows heraldic rules by placing silver on azure. This design reflects the town’s identity.

Vanzaghello offers more than just administrative facts. Consider the religious buildings. The parish church of Sant’Ambrogio has a long construction history. Building began in 1730 on an old chapel site. It was initiated by Cristoforo Bonazzi. The work lasted about 11 years. The bell tower and facade weren’t done until 1895. It was consecrated in 1920. Recently the building and its 19th-century Bernasconi organ were restored.

Then there’s the church of San Rocco. It is known since 1570. San Carlo Borromeo had plans drawn up during a pastoral visit. It features a rectangular hall ending in a circular apse. The altarpiece shows the Virgin Mary with Child flanked by Saints Rocco and Sebastian.

Don’t miss the Church of Madonna della Neve. It is known as “Madonna in Campagna”. It stands outside the town. Dating back to 1666 it has a central plan. The apse features a fresco of the Madonna enthroned with Child. A small garden offers a place to rest. From the portico you can view the church interior.

Today Vanzaghello has 5262 residents. Its economy has shifted from textile industries to services. Vanzaghello borders Samarate Lonate Pozzolo Magnago and Castano Primo.

Vanzaghello is a blend of history nature and community.
