Gazing upon this edifice makes one ponder. What stories do its walls conceal? This is the Paroisse Saint-Thomas d’Aquin. It stands as a testament to faith and community in Montreal.

The Paroisse Saint-Thomas d’Aquin’s story began with its canonical erection on June 18 1908. Its registers opened shortly after on July 5 1908. The parish served Montreal for many years.

Construction of the church occurred in 1923. The church offered a place of worship. It was a spiritual anchor for its parishioners.

Interestingly in the late 1960s changes occurred. The Saint-Henri parish church was demolished. The parishioners needed a new place of worship. Paroisse Saint-Thomas d’Aquin stepped in to fill this void. It became the new spiritual home for the Saint-Henri community.

The city of Saint-Henri has its own rich history. It was created on February 23 1875. Part of its territory was later used to create the village of Ste Cunegonde in 1876. Saint-Henri became a city in 1894. It was eventually annexed to Montreal in 1905.

Sadly the Paroisse Saint-Thomas d’Aquin’s story as a parish came to an end in 1990. It was dissolved and its territory was integrated into the St Anthony of Padua parish.

Let us delve into some demographic details. In 2021 the population of Montreal including St Thomas Aquinas was 1762949. This number reflects a growing city. It shows the evolving demographics of the area. The numbers offer a glimpse into the past. They show how the community around the Paroisse Saint-Thomas d’Aquin has changed over the years.

Before it closed the Saint-Henri Church was renamed Église de Saint-Henri in 1968. The church closed its doors in 2001. It then transitioned into a community center. In 2004, the building found new life. It became the Hôtel des Encans also known as the Iegor Auction House.

While its role as a parish has ended the building remains. It stands as a landmark in the neighborhood. The Paroisse Saint-Thomas d’Aquin serves as a reminder of the past.

The story of the Paroisse Saint-Thomas d’Aquin is one of faith community and change. From its early days as a parish to its later role as a community center. It has adapted to the needs of the city. Its walls have witnessed the ebb and flow of history. It remains a place that has touched many lives. As we stand here let us remember its legacy.
