Rising majestically above the Upper East Side, the Trump Palace Condominiums offer a glimpse into luxury living. This 54-story skyscraper at 200 East 69th Street stands as a testament to architectural ambition and opulent design. It held the title of the tallest building on the Upper East Side for 26 years.
Trump Palace Condominiums was completed in 1991. Its story begins long before its completion. The land beneath this impressive structure was once occupied by the New York Foundling Hospital. Donald Trump purchased the property in 1985. Community groups tried to prevent the construction of a high-rise building on the site.
Construction commenced in April 1989 with an estimated cost of $185 million. The vision for Trump Palace was brought to life by Frank Williams. Williams designed the tower to evoke the Art Deco buildings of the 1920s and 1930s. The tower is made of granite.
The New York Times offered a mixed review of Trump Palace. The central tower is a skillful composition of brick and glass. Corner windows adorn the edges of the tower like faceted gems. Trump Palace makes little effort to fit into its surroundings. It wants to stick out on the skyline like a prima donna. The newspaper saw it more as a hangover from the 1980s than an homage to earlier architecture.
Low-rise townhouses are at the tower’s base along with a small plaza. These were part of a zoning requirement. Trump Palace has apartments that provide residents with amazing views. Gazing out their windows visitors come face to face with the soaring designer skyscrapers. Each tower tries to upstage the others like sumptuously costumed guests at a charity ball.
Trump Palace offers a range of apartments. These include studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom residences. The building has a welcoming lobby furnished in marble and mahogany.
Amenities include a courtyard, doorman and fitness center. There is also a garden, laundry room and parking. Some apartments have features like rooftop decks. Bathrooms boast bathtubs, glass showers and oversized mirrors. Kitchens feature fully equipped amenities.
The Trump Palace Condominiums stands not only as a residential building. It also stands as a symbol of New York City’s ever-evolving skyline.
