Whispers of history echo around the Nikolaiturm. It stands as a solitary sentinel, a poignant reminder of a bygone era. The Nikolaiturm, once part of the larger St. Nicholas Church, now stands alone, its church tragically destroyed by fire in 1744. The tower itself, however, survived, bearing witness to centuries of Erfurt’s history. Constructed in 1360-61, the Nikolaiturm is among Erfurt’s oldest and most treasured cultural landmarks. Originally, St. Nicholas Church, with its prominent tower, served as a bridgehead church for the Lehmann Bridge, first documented in 1182. If you look closely at the tower’s north face, you can still see the uneven masonry and doorways where the church once connected. Within the Nikolaiturm lies the Elisabethkapelle, a chapel dedicated to St. Elizabeth. This chapel, with its square layout, features a cross-ribbed vaulted ceiling and slightly pointed arched walls. The masonry is of limestone, while the door, window, and altar niche jambs are made of large sandstone blocks. The walls of the Elisabethkapelle once boasted a vibrant medieval painting cycle depicting scenes from the life of St. Elizabeth. Although only portions on the south wall remain visible today, restoration efforts have revealed that all the chapel walls were originally adorned with these beautiful paintings. In 2006, as a prelude to the “Elisabeth Year” of 2007, the Elisabethkapelle within the Nikolaiturm was reopened to the public. The restored medieval wall paintings depicting St. Elizabeth’s life (1207-1231) provide a glimpse into the artistic and spiritual world of medieval Erfurt. The Nikolaiturm stands not just as a testament to Erfurt’s past, but also as a symbol of resilience and enduring faith.
