Did you know Beiyuan in Beijing is more than just a location on a map? It is a place steeped in history. It also buzzes with modern life.

Beiyuan is a subdistrict in Beijing’s Tongzhou District. Its name whispers tales of old. “Beiyuan” translates to “North Manor”. This refers to an estate once owned by Qing Dynasty officials. They oversaw the transportation of grains via the Grand Canal.

Today, Beiyuan is a vibrant community. In 2020, it housed 108,840 residents. The floating population is estimated at six million. That is quite a jump.

Let’s rewind a bit. In 1948, four townships merged to form Tongzhou City. By 1950, it became a county-administered town. A significant change occurred in 1997. Tongzhou Town was disbanded. Then Xicheng Subdistrict was incorporated into Beiyuan Subdistrict.

Beiyuan is divided into 13 communities. Each community has its unique name and character. You will find Xinhuaxi Jie. Also Zhongshan Jie. And Fuxing Nanli. There is also Beiyuanqiao. Each name tells a story of its own.

Getting around Beiyuan is easy. Many bus lines serve the area. These include lines 415, 426, 430 and more. Most of these lines connect Beiyuan to Beijing city proper. Public transport is well established here.

Also, the Tongzhou Beiyuan Station is on the Batong line. It provides easy access to other parts of Beijing. The station opened in December 2003. It has two elevated side platforms.

Beiyuan is a blend of old and new. You will see modern transportation systems. Also, you can sense the echoes of Qing Dynasty officials.

Beiyuan is a reminder of Beijing’s dynamic history. From its origins as a “North Manor” to its current status as a bustling subdistrict, Beiyuan continues to evolve. Its story is etched in every street. It resonates with every resident. It shows how Beijing has transformed over the centuries. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet.
