Remember Karachi. That’s where Dubai’s aviation story truly began. Before gleaming terminals and record-breaking passenger numbers, Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 1 has witnessed incredible transformations.
It all started in 1937. A simple agreement was signed for a flying boat base. This humble beginning cost just 440 rupees a month. Today, Terminal 1 stands as a testament to Dubai’s soaring ambitions.
Construction of the airport was ordered in 1959 by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The airport officially opened on September 30, 1960. Back then, it could only handle a Douglas DC-3. The runway was made of compacted sand.
In May 1963, work began on a proper asphalt runway. By 1969, nine airlines served around 20 destinations.
The inauguration on May 15, 1966, marked a turning point. The first big jets arrived. They were De Havilland Comets from Middle East Airlines and Kuwait Airways.
The 1970s saw more development. A new terminal building was constructed. It had three stories and a control tower. The runway was lengthened to handle Boeing 747s and Concordes.
A new runway opened in April 1984. It had advanced meteorological and lighting systems.
Terminal 1 has a capacity of 45 million passengers today. Over 100 airlines use it. It connects to Concourse D via an automated people mover. The terminal spans a huge area. It has hundreds of check-in counters.
Originally, Terminal 1 was built to handle far fewer passengers. But with increasing congestion, the airport expanded. It added remote gates to accommodate more flights.
In 2013, Dubai Airports announced a major renovation. The upgrades included baggage systems and check-in desks. A more spacious departure hall was created. Arrivals also saw improvements to reduce waiting times. The renovation was completed in mid-2015.
Concourse D is connected to Terminal 1. It has a capacity of 15 million passengers. It features 17 gates.
In September 2012, Dubai Airports changed the names of concourses. Concourse 1 became Concourse C. This made navigation easier.
Terminal 1 and Concourse D reopened in June 2021. This happened after a closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Terminal 1 stands as a reminder of Dubai’s journey. From a simple sand runway to a world-class aviation hub, Terminal 1 embodies the spirit of Dubai. It’s a place of constant innovation and soaring ambition. It connects people and cultures from across the globe.
