Justice’s ancient halls stand before you. This is the Brisbane Supreme Court. Its imposing presence speaks volumes. It whispers tales of trials triumphs and tragedies.

The Brisbane Supreme Court wasn’t always this grand. Its history stretches back to 1861. Before its current magnificent building it occupied humble beginnings. The court initially convened in the Old Convict Barracks on Queen Street. Imagine lawyers and judges working amidst the ghosts of past prisoners. Even on Sundays this space doubled as a church. A unique blend of justice and faith.

The convict barracks proved inadequate. By 1870 a new building was necessary. Architect Francis Drummond Greville Stanley designed an elegant neoclassical structure. However budget cuts forced modifications. John Petrie completed the construction in 1875. This building served the court for nearly a century.

On September 1 1968 a devastating arson attack scarred the court. This act of vandalism led to its demolition. A new building arose from the ashes. Designed by Bligh Jessup Bretnall it opened in 1981. This modern structure reflected Queensland’s growth.

However even this building wasn’t destined to last. A major redevelopment project commenced in 2008. Architectus Brisbane designed the current Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law. This impressive complex opened in 2012. It includes a public plaza. It’s a symbol of modern justice. The precinct occupies a whole city block. A testament to the importance of justice in Brisbane.

The Brisbane Supreme Court has witnessed pivotal moments. In 1989 Justice Angelo Vasta faced removal from office. This was the first time a state used such a method since federation. His removal followed false evidence given during the Fitzgerald Inquiry. The Brisbane Supreme Court stands as a silent observer of Queensland’s history. Its walls have echoed with arguments pleas and verdicts. They have witnessed the evolution of Queensland’s justice system. From its humble beginnings in a convict barracks to its current majestic presence. The Brisbane Supreme Court continues to uphold the rule of law. It stands as a symbol of justice in Queensland. Its story is one of adaptation resilience and unwavering commitment to the pursuit of justice.
