A mountain gate stands before us. This is Shanmen. It’s more than just an entrance. It’s a portal. A gateway to enlightenment. For centuries Shanmen at Buddhist temples welcomed pilgrims. They sought spiritual solace in the quiet mountains.

Shanmen means Mountain Gate. This reflects the temples’ secluded mountain locations. Chan monks sought refuge there. They escaped the distractions of secular life. Think of the peace. Imagine the quiet contemplation.

But the name has another meaning. Some believe Shanmen is a corruption of Sanmen Three Gates. These represent three paths to liberation. Kongmen emptiness liberation. Wuxiangmen no-aspects liberation. Wuyuanmen desireless liberation. Each gate symbolizes a step towards spiritual freedom.

Shanmen’s architectural style varies. Sometimes it’s a simple gateway. Other times it’s a grand hall. Often you’ll find three archways. Two smaller ones flank a central larger one. This symbolizes the Three Gates to liberation.

In Shanmen halls you might see statues. Heng and Ha stand guard. These warrior attendants protect the temple. They’re also known as Nio or Yakasha deities. They hold Vajras symbolic of strength and sharpness. One’s mouth is open. The other’s is closed. They represent sounds ‘a’ and ‘hong’. They are powerful guardians.

Shanmen at Jietai Temple in Beijing is a prime example. The side gateways are simplified to arched windows. The central gate is the main entrance. The Shanmen is the most important gate in the temple. It was essential for the monks. It was important for the pilgrims too.

The Shanmen. It is a symbol of transition. A passage to inner peace. A visual representation of the spiritual journey. It welcomes you to a world of serenity and contemplation. It is Shanmen.
