Have you ever felt the warmth of a community woven through generations? Welcome to Covenant Presbyterian Church. Right here on West 80th Street this church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community spirit.
Covenant Presbyterian Church wasn’t always here. Its story began in 1947. The Los Angeles Presbytery sent Reverend Lloyd Halverson to explore North Inglewood and Westchester. He went door to door. He sought to establish a new Presbyterian church. This tireless work laid the foundation for Covenant.
In February 1948 a steering committee formed. The first worship services began just weeks later. They were held at the Westchester Christian Church. It wasn’t until May 23 1948 that Covenant was officially recognized. It was a small beginning a seed of faith planted in fertile ground.
The church quickly grew. It opened a preschool in 1963. That preschool continues to thrive even today. Over the years Covenant has been more than just a place of worship. It has embraced social justice. It supported Project Action the United Farm Workers and the Fair Housing Act. Covenant partners with organizations like the Food Pantry LAX and the Westchester Mental Health Guild. The church also generously opens its doors to various community groups. Boy Scouts Cub Scouts and 12-step programs have all found a home at Covenant.
Covenant Presbyterian Church combines traditional Reformed worship with a contemporary approach. The music is a delightful mix of old and new. Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. Services are also available online on YouTube and Facebook. Covenant truly extends its reach beyond its walls. It embraces technology to connect with its members and the wider community.
The building itself is a quiet witness to decades of shared experiences. The walls have likely echoed with prayers laughter and perhaps a few tears. Within these walls families have celebrated milestones. They’ve sought comfort in times of trouble. They’ve found strength in fellowship. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith.
Covenant Presbyterian Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of faith community and service. It continues to serve Los Angeles and welcome all who seek spiritual guidance. A rich legacy continues to unfold here. This is Covenant a place of enduring faith.
