Interestingly, Namyeong-dong could tell tales that stretch back further than you think. Seoul’s story begins long before the skyscrapers. Humans lived here since the Paleolithic Age.

Namyeong-dong has been part of Seoul’s narrative for millennia. The area now known as Seoul has been occupied since prehistoric times. Archaeological finds in the Gangdong District show settlements dating back 3,000 to 7,000 years.

In 18 BC, Seoul became the capital of the Baekje kingdom. They called it Wiryeseong. Remnants of city walls from that era can still be found. However, these are south of the Han River. They are not in the historic Seoul district. This district centers on modern-day Jongno District.

Control of the Han River meant strategic control. Around 1104, King Sukjong of Goryeo built a palace near Gyeongbokgung. It was called Namgyeong or Southern Capital. During this time, Seoul, and thus also Namyeong-dong, grew in political importance.

In 1394, Seoul became the capital of the Joseon Dynasty. It was known as Hanyang and Hanseong. Hanseong means Fortress City on the Han River. Massive walls once encircled the city. These protected citizens from wild animals and attacks. The city expanded beyond these walls. Gates like Sungnyemun and Heunginjimun remain.

The late 19th century brought modernization to Seoul. The city opened to foreigners. It gained electricity, trolley cars, and telephone systems. An American visitor in 1904 praised Seoul’s clean and spacious streets.

Under Japanese colonial rule from 1910 to 1945, Seoul was called Keijo. In 1949, after liberation, the city regained its name, Seoul. It became the capital of South Korea.

The Korean War in the 1950s devastated Seoul. The city changed hands four times. An estimated 191,000 buildings were ruined. The conflict caused a flood of refugees.

After the war, Seoul saw immense reconstruction. Rapid economic growth in the 1960s and 1970s improved living standards. In 1963, Seoul expanded. It annexed towns and villages from surrounding areas.

The 1980s brought high-rise buildings. Pollution and traffic became major issues. Seoul became one of the world’s most crowded metropolitan areas. Seoul hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Today, Seoul’s population comprises 20% of South Korea’s total. The city attracts workers from many countries. Seoul has become a global hub.

In 2004, there was a failed attempt to relocate the capital. The government considered moving it to Gongju. The Constitutional Court ruled against it.

Seoul continues to evolve. It balances modernity with its rich history. Namyeong-dong remains a vital part of this dynamic city.
