High above us soars Man and Pegasus a breathtaking bronze sculpture. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a masterpiece by the renowned Carl Milles. Created in 1949 it’s considered his boldest work. Milles captured the very essence of the Greek myth. The winged horse Pegasus ascends towards the heavens. A young man guides him only lightly touching the horse’s wing. They symbolize the freedom of art and thought.

The Man and Pegasus sculpture initially faced a challenge. Its placement on a four-meter pedestal somewhat diminished its impact. It didn’t fully capture Milles’s vision of weightless movement. Luckily a taller ten-meter granite pedestal was added in 1961. Now the sculpture’s powerful upward surge is fully realized. You can see it now from all sides. That’s because Carl Milles chose its location carefully. Linnέplatsen in Slottsparken offered the perfect wide-open views.

Interestingly copies of Man and Pegasus exist worldwide. You can find them in Iowa USA Antwerp Japan and even on Lidingö. The sculpture in Malmö played a significant role. It symbolized Sweden’s bid to host the 2004 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. A lesser-known fact is that a copy of the sculpture was actually targeted for destruction. In 1997 an individual attempted to blow up a different Man and Pegasus sculpture on Lidingö. This act of sabotage was linked to protests against police raids. It highlighted the sculpture’s symbolic representation of freedom and protest.

The Man and Pegasus is more than just a beautiful sight. It’s a testament to artistic daring. It’s a symbol of freedom a piece of history. And here we stand beneath its majestic form. It continues to inspire awe and contemplation. This bold bronze sculpture reminds us of the power of art to transcend time and boundaries. It connects the past to the present its message remains timeless.
