Founded in 1920 the Hockey Gesellschaft Nürnberg HGN boasts a rich history. It’s more than just a hockey club. It’s a vibrant community. Right here on Buchenbuechler Weg you stand before a testament to sporting excellence and community spirit. The HGN started with just 22 people. Their shared love for hockey blossomed into a century-long legacy.
Initially focused on field hockey the club quickly expanded. In 1921 ice hockey joined the lineup. This led to the HGN’s first North Bavarian championship title. Twelve more titles followed until 1959 a testament to their early dominance. The HGN’s success wasn’t limited to hockey. Tennis handball athletics and even Faustball became part of the club’s diverse offerings. By 1925 membership exceeded 100 demonstrating its growing appeal.
A remarkable story surrounds the construction of their woodland sports ground. The “HGN spirit” united the members. They collectively sacrificed a year of their beloved sports. They dedicated approximately 30000 hours of volunteer labor. Their dedication built their impressive facility.
The club added table tennis and roller skating to its roster. These thrived until World War II. Unfortunately the war interrupted the club’s activities. The hockey field served as a US military cemetery for approximately 1000 war graves. Another smaller cemetery was dedicated to unknown fallen German soldiers.
Post-war rebuilding tested the club’s resilience. The sports ground expanded. A new clubhouse was built in a different location. The reinvigorated facility featured three grass pitches a Faustball field a hard court and six tennis courts. This expansion reflects the club’s commitment to growth and diversification.
The HGN’s ice hockey team reached new heights in 1958-59. They ascended to the second-tier ice hockey Oberliga. In 1965 the ice hockey division transitioned to the newly formed Spielgemeinschaft SG Nuremberg. The HGN’s field hockey teams have climbed through leagues. They played in the Bavarian Oberliga from 1973 to 1978.
In 1986 the club opened its first artificial turf pitch. This landmark improvement signified a commitment to modern facilities. The addition of lacrosse in 2017 expanded the HGN’s offerings. The Nuremberg Wizards a new lacrosse team now calls the HGN home. The HGN Patriots an inline hockey team also joined the family. The HGN continues to thrive. It remains a leading sports club in Southern Germany. Its legacy of community spirit athletic achievement and adaptability continues to inspire. This is the Hockey Gesellschaft Nürnberg a place where passion and teamwork define its story.
