Gleaming silver underfoot. That’s the first thing you’ll notice about the Silver Pagoda. It’s also known as Wat Preah Keo or Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

The Silver Pagoda sits within Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace compound. It is a testament to Cambodia’s rich history. Its location ensures it is a must-see for visitors.

The Silver Pagoda got its name from over 5000 silver tiles. Each tile weighs about one kilogram. Most of these are covered to protect their shine.

King Norodom built the Silver Pagoda in 1892. He sought a place to meet monks and hear their sermons. The Silver Pagoda became a center for spiritual enrichment. It also served as a sacred space for royal ceremonies.

Inside, the Silver Pagoda holds invaluable treasures. The Emerald Buddha is made of Baccarat crystal. It sits atop a gilded pedestal. A life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha dazzles with 2086 diamonds. One diamond is an astounding 25 carats. This Buddha weighs 90 kg and was created between 1906 and 1907.

The staircase leading to the Silver Pagoda is Italian marble.

Photography isn’t permitted inside the Silver Pagoda. This protects the artifacts. It allows visitors to fully appreciate their splendor.

Outside the Silver Pagoda, murals depict sagas of the Ramayana. These murals offer insight into Khmer artistry. You’ll also find Buddhist scriptures written on palm leaves.

The Silver Pagoda was rebuilt in 1962. During the Khmer Rouge regime, it was preserved. This showed the world Cambodia’s concern for its cultural riches. Though some contents were lost, much remains.

Visiting the Silver Pagoda offers a glimpse into Khmer civilization. It showcases the brilliance and richness of its art. Allow about two hours to fully explore this site. The Silver Pagoda is open daily from 8.30 am to 11.30 am and 2 pm to 7 pm. The entry fee is $10. Make the Silver Pagoda part of your Cambodia itinerary.
