Amidst the grandeur of St. Petersburg, a new beacon of faith arises. The Церковь Нины равноапостольной, a church dedicated to St. Nina of Georgia, stands as a testament to resilience and remembrance. This church, also commemorating the 80th anniversary of Leningrad’s liberation from the Nazi blockade, has a story to tell. The cornerstone of Церковь Нины равноапостольной was consecrated on July 5, 2024. Metropolitan Barsanuphius of St. Petersburg and Ladoga led the ceremony. He gifted the future church an icon of the apostles Peter and Paul. Governor Alexander Beglov, present at the ceremony, highlighted the reverence held for St. Nina by Leningrad’s citizens. They believed her intercessions protected the city. Her feast day, January 27th, coincided with the enemy’s retreat in 1944. The location of Церковь Нины равноапостольной is poignant. It stands near the Novo-Volkovskoye Cemetery. This cemetery holds the mass graves of Leningrad’s residents and defenders. It served as the final resting place for many during the war. A commemorative cross, erected in 2021, and a wooden chapel, consecrated in 2022, mark the area. Inside the walls of Церковь Нины равноапостольной, the memory of those lost during the blockade will be perpetually honored. The church, designed by architects Valentin Kogan and Boris Bogdanovich, will house memorial plaques. These plaques depict the blockade’s main events in verse and prose. Capsules filled with soil from significant locations related to the blockade and defense of Leningrad will rest within the church’s foundation or walls. Церковь Нины равноапостольной stands as a powerful symbol. It honors a revered saint and remembers a city’s struggle. It reminds us of faith’s enduring power amidst adversity.
