Gazing upon Fort de Mons, one might imagine echoes of marching soldiers. Yet, this fortress holds a surprising tale. Fort de Mons in Mons-en-Barœul, near Lille, stands as a testament to France’s post-1870 war anxieties. Built between 1878 and 1880, Fort de Mons was part of Lille’s intricate defense system. It was designed as a key element in the “Camp retranché de Lille,” intended to thwart enemy maneuvers. The fort housed approximately 600 men and boasted an array of artillery pieces. Its location, 5km from Lille’s citadel, allowed it to control vital roads and railways. Interestingly, the fort’s construction involved over 600 Belgian workers, renowned for their bricklaying expertise. Over three million bricks were meticulously laid, creating the robust structure we see today. Fort de Mons, briefly known as Fort Macdonald, never faced the enemy attack it was designed for. During World War I, Lille was declared an “open city.” Fort de Mons became a prisoner-of-war camp, holding British and Portuguese soldiers. Between the wars, a military unit specialized in carrier pigeons occupied the fort. During World War II, the Germans again used the fort for logistical purposes. In the postwar era, the fort housed a signals unit, reflecting the changing nature of warfare. Sold to Mons-en-Barœul in 1972, Fort de Mons underwent a transformation. Architect Gérard David spearheaded the renovation. The fort now houses a library, a play center, a multimedia cultural space, an exhibition hall, a music school, a theater, and even a restaurant. From a bastion of defense to a hub of culture, Fort de Mons offers a unique glimpse into history’s unexpected turns.
