Picture this. You are standing before Coorparoo State School a place steeped in history. This isn’t just any school. Coorparoo State School opened its doors on January 31 1876. It’s a living testament to Queensland’s dedication to education.

Originally a simple two-room timber building with verandahs this humble structure served a growing community. Samuel Stevens a local landowner generously donated two acres of his land for the school. The school’s name itself is a fascinating piece of history. A variation of the Aboriginal name for the area Cooraparoo it was proposed by the school committee. This name might refer to a place with many mosquitoes or the sound of a gentle dove.

As Brisbane expanded so did Coorparoo. The school quickly outgrew its small beginnings. Expansions in 1885 1887 and 1889 couldn’t keep pace with the increasing student population. A playshed built in 1907 is a testament to the importance of play in the school curriculum. This playshed remains a unique feature of Coorparoo State School.

The early 20th century saw a significant upgrade. Overcrowding led to the construction of two linked two-storey brick buildings Block B. This grand project completed in 1933 cost a staggering 11513 pounds. The Great Depression impacted construction. Relief programs funded improvements including landscaping and retaining walls. The school grounds became a haven of mature trees and playing fields.

The school continued to adapt. Block A a stunning two-storey brick building was completed in 1942. This building included an undercroft play area. World War II impacted the school. It served as a first aid post and air raid shelter. Students contributed to the war effort knitting for soldiers and growing food for hospitals.

Post-war population growth meant more expansions. A high-set timber building Block C was added in 1950. The school reached its peak enrollment in 1958 with 1600 students. Many additions and renovations followed reflecting the school’s ongoing commitment to education.

In 2017 Coorparoo State School joined the Queensland Heritage Register. This recognition celebrates its remarkable history. Its impressive brick buildings and landscaped grounds stand as a tribute to the generations of students who have learned and played within its walls. The school’s journey from a humble timber structure to a heritage-listed institution is a captivating story. A story you are now part of.
