A rush of air. That’s what you might notice as cars zoom by, entering or exiting the Tunnel Wersten. This isn’t just any tunnel. It’s a key part of Düsseldorf’s infrastructure. The Tunnel Wersten also known as Werstener Tunnel is a dual-tube motorway tunnel. It carries the A46 highway beneath the Wersten district. Think of it as a hidden artery, efficiently moving traffic below the surface.
Built in the mid-1980s, the Tunnel Wersten primarily serves as a noise barrier. This reduces traffic noise for the residents above. The nearby Universitätstunnel shares a similar purpose. Both tunnels were built to improve the quality of life in their respective areas.
Each tube of the Tunnel Wersten stretches 865 meters. Each tube has three lanes and an emergency lane. This design ensures smooth traffic flow for the nearly 100,000 vehicles that pass through it daily. That’s a significant number, making it one of the busiest tunnels in North Rhine-Westphalia. To be precise, nearly 99,600 vehicles use the tunnel every day. Heavy goods vehicles account for 11.4 percent of the traffic.
Interestingly, the Düsseldorf-Wersten interchange is partially located within the tunnel itself. If you are traveling from Wuppertal towards Düsseldorf city center, the exit is partly inside the tunnel. The same goes for traffic heading from Wersten towards Wuppertal. This design is an unusual but functional feature of the Tunnel Wersten.
Above the Tunnel Wersten, you’ll find a park. This green space provides a welcome contrast to the busy highway below. It’s a clever way to integrate infrastructure with green spaces. The tunnel itself has a height of 4.85 meters. Each tube is 16.85 meters wide.
Safety is paramount. The Tunnel Wersten underwent extensive renovations, completed by 2015. The upgrade brought it in line with the 2006 RABT safety standards for road tunnels. These standards cover equipment and operations.
When you drive through the Tunnel Wersten, remember its purpose. It’s not only a way to get from point A to point B. It’s also a carefully designed piece of infrastructure. The tunnel reduces noise, manages traffic, and even incorporates green space. The speed limit in the tunnel is 80 km/h. Next time you pass through, take a moment to appreciate the engineering.
