From the heights of Furnàs, gaze down upon the patchwork of history spread below. Furnàs isn’t just a peak; it’s a silent witness to Ibiza’s vibrant past. The Phoenicians, arriving in 654 BC, saw in Ibiza a strategic trading hub. They established a bustling port, transforming the island into a key Mediterranean power. They called Ibiza, Ibossim, after their god Bes. This peak, Furnàs, watched as their ships, laden with “white gold” – salt from the Salinas salt pans – sailed towards distant shores. The island’s salt production dates back to the Phoenicians. The Romans arrived later and renamed Ibiza Ebusus. They recognized the island’s location on the busy trading routes, and respected its existing Punic institutions and traditions, allowing them to continue. Furnàs observed the changing tides of power, the arrival of the Byzantines, the Normans, then the Moors in 901 AD. They called it Yebisah, their influence echoing in the architecture still visible today. In 1235, Catalan troops reclaimed Ibiza for Christianity. The mosque atop Ibiza Town was replaced by the current cathedral. The villages were renamed for Christian saints. Furnàs, standing tall, saw it all. The 16th and 17th centuries brought relentless pirate attacks. The islanders built defensive churches and towers, including those surrounding Dalt Vila. Furnàs, a natural watchtower, offered a panoramic view of these struggles. Even in modern times, Furnàs has observed Ibiza’s transformation. The rise of tourism, beginning with a regular ferry service in the 1930s, changed the island’s quiet existence forever. The arrival of artists and writers seeking refuge, followed by the hippies in the 1960s, established Ibiza’s reputation as a haven for free spirits. Today, Furnàs witnesses the bustling activity of one of Europe’s top tourist destinations. Its natural beauty, pristine waters, and the constant hum of Ibiza’s renowned nightlife unfolds below. Furnàs, unchanging, offers a glimpse into the heart of Ibiza, a place where history whispers on the wind.
