Imagine a bustling neighborhood in Drumul Taberei. Here stands Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului a beacon of faith. This Roman Catholic church has a story that intertwines faith community and perseverance.
In 1992 Archbishop Ioan Robu saw a need. He wanted to create a parish in the densely populated Drumul Taberei. This area had many Roman Catholic families. He envisioned a church a parish house and a kindergarten. It would be a welcoming complex for all.
Obtaining land was the first hurdle. In 1994 the city of Bucharest granted a 2300 square meter plot. Plans were drawn and approved by 1995. Construction began that same year.
Building Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului was a labor of love. From May 1995 to October 1999 the church slowly rose. The parish house and kindergarten were also built.
Even unfinished Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului opened its doors. It began services on August 15 1998. Work continued inside. Marble floors and paneling were added. The main altar received special attention. Marble from Rușchița adorned it. Sculptor Damian Gomez created a crucifix for the altar.
In November 1999 final touches were applied. Painters and carpenters worked diligently. Only 26 of the needed 40 benches were ready. The parish house was complete and functional. The kindergarten opened in September 2000.
The community’s needs extended beyond worship and education. Parish leaders recognized the need for a cemetery. In 1998 they requested land from Sector 6 City Hall. They sought 10000 square meters for a parish cemetery.
Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului thrives today. It has no filial churches. The parish records list 790 families and 2370 members. This church is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith and community. It represents a dedicated vision.
