What secrets does this old stone sentinel hold? Right here stands the Oberer Roßmühlenturm. It is a proud part of Freiberg’s historic town wall. This tower whispers tales of battles and resilience.

Freiberg’s history is deeply rooted in mining. Around 1168, silver ore was discovered nearby. This discovery transformed a small village into a bustling town. Markgraf Otto von Meißen recognized the potential. He granted special freedoms to miners. People flocked to Freiberg. The town quickly grew.

To protect this valuable resource, Freiberg built a strong defensive wall. The Oberer Roßmühlenturm was one of many towers along this wall. These towers guarded the town against invaders. In the 17th century, Freiberg faced several sieges. During the Thirty Years’ War, enemy forces repeatedly attacked the city. The Oberer Roßmühlenturm played a role in these conflicts.

In 1639, during a siege by Barnèr, the Oberer Roßmühlenturm and a large section of the ring wall were hit. A breach was created. Despite the damage, Freiberg’s defenders held their ground. The city remained unconquered.

Imagine the scene during those turbulent times. Soldiers stood watch atop the Oberer Roßmühlenturm. They scanned the horizon for approaching enemies. The air was thick with tension. Cannons roared. Arrows flew. The fate of Freiberg hung in the balance.

The town wall originally had 41 towers. By 1643, only 39 remained. There were also 18 outworks on the outer Zwingermauer. These were defended by craft guilds and the Bergknappschaft mining brotherhood. The Oberer Roßmühlenturm was strategically located. It was between the Altschlossturm and the Turm des Pestpfarrers.

Today, only a few sections of Freiberg’s town wall remain. Among the preserved towers are the Altschlossturm, Turm des Pestpfarrers, Oberer Roßmühlenturm, Lazarett-Turm, Kalkturm, and Gelber Löweturm. These towers stand as reminders of Freiberg’s rich history. They evoke images of medieval fortifications.

The Oberer Roßmühlenturm is more than just an old tower. It is a symbol of Freiberg’s enduring spirit. It connects us to a time when the town’s survival depended on its strong defenses. As you stand before this historic structure, consider the stories it could tell. Think of the people who defended Freiberg from its walls. Their courage and determination helped shape the city we see today. The Oberer Roßmühlenturm stands tall. It is a testament to Freiberg’s past.
