“Did you know the Friedenskirche in Düsseldorf almost didn’t exist?” I ask my captivated audience. We stand before the church its imposing presence filling our view. This beautiful building boasts a fascinating history.

The Friedenskirche wasn’t always a given. In 1892 the Protestant community in Düsseldorf purchased land in Unterbilk due to explosive population growth. Two architectural competitions were held in 1893. Anton Käppler’s modern design won for the Unterbilk site. Yet the community preferred a more conventional style. Ironically Georg Weidenbach who won the competition for Oberbilk and had previously worked with Käppler was chosen. His design was finalized in 1894.

Before construction began however a temporary worship space was needed. A community building designed by Hermann vom Endt was built on Konenstraße. It served its purpose for three years. Finally from 1896-1899 the Friedenskirche was built under Weidenbach’s artistic supervision and Moritz Korn’s local management. The nearly square structure featured a striking five-meter-high crucifix in the chancel arch upon completion. It also had a unique bell tower. Square at the base it transitioned into an octagonal shape higher up.

Sadly the World War II bombing of June 11/12 1943 devastated the Friedenskirche. Only the sacristy survived relatively unscathed. Reconstruction took until 1953. The interior was redesigned in a simpler style. Much of the original beauty was lost. The building was extensively damaged but they decided to rebuild.

The original vibrant interior was renowned. It featured stunning murals by Eduard von Gebhardt. This biblical cycle commissioned by the Prussian state was completed in 1898. The murals were presented to the congregation in 1907. Even the Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm attended. Today only fragments remain.

Despite the wartime destruction and the simplification of the design during the reconstruction the Friedenskirche remains a Düsseldorf landmark. Its story a testament to resilience faith and the enduring power of community. Look closely you might catch a glimpse of the past. Fragments of Gebhardt’s murals or the simple yet elegant lines of the post-war renovation are visible. The Friedenskirche stands as a symbol of peace a beacon of hope. Its history lives on in its walls.
