Life Christian Church has a history. Stephen Randall Johnson founded it on May 5, 1985. It started as a Bible study with seven people. Young and college-age students mainly composed the group. They first met in a recreation room of a retirement mobile home park. The owner offered Pastor Stephen a mobile home to rent. He also allowed the use of the recreation center. Then a single himself, Pastor Stephen started the church at age 29. He worked toward his Theology degree at Berean Bible College in San Diego. He received no salary in those early years. He fit work between church and Bible College. Sundays were held in an empty bar of a local motel. The worship team set up instruments on the dance floor. Cigarette butts and empty glasses were cleared before Sunday school.
The church moved to Washington Park’s recreation building. They hoped to find a permanent home. In early 1987, Pastor Stephen made a risky decision. Space was available in an industrial park. The city had not approved it for church use. Life Christian Church, then known as His Church, moved in. They petitioned the city council for a conditional use permit. The city agreed. Miraculously, money came in to pay rent for the warehouse. The church began to grow. Young people brought friends and family. The building transformed from a cold warehouse. Singles and young families zealously constructed the church. People from all walks of life attended. The congregation included many races, genders, and ages.
Dr. Mark T Barclay became Pastor Stephen’s pastor. Pastor Stephen continued his education. He finished his Masters and Doctorate at Bethel College. He married Zane Alkhas in June 1987. She became an active partner in the ministry.
Word Bible College was established in 1987. It aimed to train men and women to preach the gospel. Many believers sought strong teaching and leadership from Dr. Johnson. Ministers from the college started sister churches. These churches spread across the United States and the globe.
Life Christian Church now has thriving churches in various locations. Word Bible College campuses have been established in multiple cities and countries. Hundreds of students graduate each year.
