Three wooden sails reach for heaven. This is the Annakapelle in Freiburg-Ebnet. It stands where a much older chapel once stood. That older Annakapelle dated back to 1570. Legend says Anna von Snewlin built it. She did so to atone for a relative’s murder. The original chapel was torn down in 1811. An Anna cross remains. It stands as a reminder. Four lime trees surround the cross. They were planted around 1860.

The Annakapelle you see today is quite new. It was consecrated on July 25 2010. Father Franz Enz had the idea. A support association helped build it. The St Anna-Kapelle-Verein e V maintains the chapel. They pay for its upkeep through membership fees and donations. Johannes Götz leads the association since September 30 2021.

The design is modern and open. Architect Siegfried Stier created the unique look. Three upward-pointing wooden sails form the structure. The chapel has no door. It can hold about 20 people.

A wooden sculpture dominates the interior. Thomas Rees crafted it. The sculpture is quite unusual. It shows Christ rising from the cross. Instead of thorns a sun-like crown adorns his head. The traditional Anna selbdritt group emerges from Christ’s heart. They crush the serpent of the Fall.

The Anna cross bears an inscription. It honors God and Christ’s suffering. David Strecker and Monika Kotterer commissioned the cross. They did so in 1825. It remembers the old Annakapelle.

The Annakapelle is more than a building. It’s a place of reflection. It’s a testament to faith and community. It connects past and present. It’s a place of quiet beauty. A place where stories live on.
