Built in 1993/94 the Katholisch-Apostolische Gemeinde Hamburg stands proudly in Lurup. This church isn’t just any place of worship. It’s the district church for Northern Germany. Imagine 150 people gathered for its grand opening on February 6 1994. Apostel Ernst Lenser officiated. The scripture for the day was 1 Corinthians 3 11-17.

The Katholisch-Apostolische Gemeinde Hamburg has a rich history. It’s a testament to resilience. The community’s origins trace back much further. In fact a protocoll from March 13 1932 officially records the founding of the Reformiert-apostolische Gemeinde in Hamburg. Initially services were held in rented spaces. At its peak it drew 100 attendees.

World War II devastated the community. Only seven adults remained. They had to rebuild. From November 1956 services were held in the Adventshaus in Eimsbüttel. Then in November 1978 a new location was found. A building on Schanzenstrasse was rented. After renovations it was dedicated on April 15 1979.

The search for a permanent home continued for years. Finally in 1992 a plot of land in Lurup was acquired. The current church building was constructed. Its design is unique. The altar is shaped like a ship’s bow a nod to Hamburg’s maritime heritage. A large colorful stained-glass window features the community’s radiant cross. The Katholisch-Apostolische Gemeinde Hamburg is a beacon of faith. A symbol of perseverance. A place of spiritual renewal. It’s a vital part of Hamburg’s religious landscape a story etched in brick and mortar. A living testament to unwavering devotion.
